Shame has made the distribution of sexual education difficult and dated. We worked to create sex-ed toolkits that offer unabridged information on sexual safety, health, and more.
Sex Education in our society is heavily based on shame. There is an emphasis on teaching celibacy instead of safe, healthy intimacy, and so when people are faced with pregnancy, sexual assault, or STI’s, they don’t know what to do. The popularization of taking health classes or sex ed online also contributes to the lack of thorough understanding of the topic. ShamelessUS, inspired by another project, UncensorED, is meant to break away from the fear of speaking about genuine and healthy sex education. Our goal was to create a replacement course in a way, by designing toolkits that were each focused on a different topic under the vast umbrella of sexual education. I was a part of the research team for the topic, “genital maintenance,” and made an informational guide page on the topic for the preparation of its subsequent toolkit.
